Masorti means engaging Jewish tradition and 21st-century life in a constant, meaningful dialogue. Halachah (Jewish law) is the framework within which Jewish life has developed over the centuries – and continues to evolve while staying true to itself.
These and these
Elu we-elu — אלו ואלו
The diversity of Jewish life: Halakhah has always been pluralistic, responding to the reality in different communities and times. Within the international Masorti movement, a multitude of voices is welcome. They resound within a clear framework that is set by the “Committee on Jewish Law and Standards” of the Rabbinical Assembly, the worldwide association of Conservative/Masorti rabbis.
Observance of Mitzvot
Kijum Mizwot — קיום מצוות
Halakhah is the Jewish “Way of Life”. The public space of synagogues and communities is governed by the rules of Shabbat, kashrut, and more. While we acknowledge that each and every Jew is on their own Jewish journey, we encourage the individual’s growth in Mitzvot. Mitzvot “bein adam le-chavero” – between fellow human beings – are just as important as those “bein adam la-makom” – between humans and God, such as prayer and ritual.
The Community of Israel
Klal Israel — כלל ישראל
“Kol Israel arevin ze ba ze – Jews have responsibility for one another.” We affirm the mutual solidarity among Jews, regardless of political and religious opinions. Therefore we support the cooperation on social and other common issues across ideological borders. For us, cooperating with international Masorti organizations is a particularly fruitful form of taking care of each other.
Made in God’s Image
Sche-assani be-Zalmo — שעשני בצלמו
Full equality of men and women, especially in the synagogue and in other ritual roles. We acknowledge that the international Masorti movement also includes not-(yet)-egalitarian communities, but hold that full religious equality is an indispensable feature of Masorti Germany. Creation’s abundance includes many gender identities and family forms, which are part of the richness of our communities.
Torah Study
Talmud Tora — תלמוד תורה
The central role of Torah study, both in traditional forms as well as with the tools of modern academia. A fulfilled Jewish life for individuals and communities needs to be based on the profound knowledge of Jewish sources and on an ongoing mature, self-empowered and critical examination of one’s own Jewish identity based thereon.
The Land of Israel
Eretz Israel — ארץ ישראל
The centrality of the Land of Israel as the center of Jewish history and Jewish experience. We nurture the connection through visits and educational programs, as the focus point of our togetherness and our hope. We encourage the study of the Hebrew language and the use of Hebrew terms, so that Jewish tradition can be expressed and experienced with all its richness.
Healing the World
Tikkun Olam – תיקון עולם
We work to “heal the world”, together with all people. We strive to increase justice and peace in order to make the world a better place for future generations.
